The Fern and Forest Sanctuary on Saint Cloud farm has been declared a South African Natural Heritage Site. There are over 500 magnificent tree ferns (Alsophylla dregeana) growing in their natural habitat, some of which tower nearly 5 meters high. It is one of the finest collections of this species in the country. The lower end of the sanctuary is a classic example of tropical indigenous forest with many smaller plant species and abundant bird life. The site is also part of the Jock of the Bushveld Conservancy. The farm itself is run as a commercial operation where avocados, passion fruit and other crops are grown for the export market.
